One of my individual jobs for this memo was to develop and distribute a survey that would help define our customer needs. I volunteered for this because I have some experience with this process from working on other design projects.
Knowing that we were time limited, I knew it would be hard to personally go out and find wheelchair users to interview or give a survey to. Knowing this I decide to create an online survey. First i figured I would just create a google poll and try to distribute it somewhere online where I could get quick feedback. The google poll I created is linked here: http://goo.gl/forms/2vzBihB2dD
After I finished the poll I started to look for places to distribute the link in order to get responses. I quickly realized that this was going to be very difficult, there was no incentive for answering the poll and I could not really ensure the quality of the respondents. I started to look into different data collection services online. I found the website Amazon Mechanical Turk, which is marketed as an "on demand, scalable workforce". Many different companies post surveys that they want answered and offer a small monetary reward for answering it.
I decided that this was the best way to get responses to our poll. All I needed to do was post a link to the survey and after someone answered it they would get payed ($0.15). The only problem was that the google poll would not work because I needed a way to produce a unique code for the respondent after they took the poll in order to ensure they actually completed the survey before they get paid. After doing some research I found a popular survey generation website: http://www.qualtrics.com/ . This website worked perfectly and I was able to create the survey fairly easily. I then submited the request on the amazon mechanical turk website and started getting responses. In the end I received 15 responses and was very pleased with the feedback.
